You only get six lives per play, with seemingly no way to replenish them. You’re equipped with a very short-range sword attack at first, but can later on find a staff/wand that allows you to do ranged attacks. There are eight item slots total, one of which is the sword you start out with.
The map is an 8×8 grid. You start on screen (4, 5). Your position is marked with a red square. The small dot marks the position of the skull that kills you. With each screen transition, the skull moves to an adjacent square.

Many players attempt to rush the process of beating Barbura, by trying to keep everything in their head, but by far the most reliable way to progress is drawing or creating a map and taking alot of notes. Several of the games secrets relies on you knowing the layout of adjacent, or far away rooms.
Hitscan on enemies may appear to be completely broken, with your dagger passing harmlessly through the enemy sprite, but that’s only because most enemies require two or more hits and the game not indicating in any way the damage your dagger does. Keep hitting and those mushrooms will soon stop jumping!
